Extravaganza Success !!!
Friday April 26th 2002 marked a milestone for members and supporters of Friends of Rwanda, Inc. The organization held its first ever fundraiser in an effort to raise funds for children affected by war and the 1994 genocide that took place in Rwanda. The all African Cultural Extravaganza was held at the Return to Royal Banquet Hall located at 879 Ralph D. Abernathy in Atlanta, Georgia and attracted close to 100 people.
The event raised a total of $1300. The activities included a silent auction of art pieces donated by outstanding artists Duhirwe Rushemeza, Adrien Frank and Nicole Eugene. Performances by The Manga African Dance Company, Capoiera Angola, jazz groupe Black Beard and a solo performance by Carmicheal. All the entertainment proved to be interesting and educational. The ceremony was not only about raising money but also promoting peace and unity. This was portrayed through poems recited by Teoorah and Ruha Benjamin.
Founded six years ago by ten individuals, the non profit organization has since then been operating on dues paid by its members and a generous donor Pastor Larry Ellington. Friends of Rwanda is comprised of 15 active members and supporters mainly from Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama. The Organization encourages all well wishers to join in the effort to make a bright and literate future for the children of Rwanda.
